On Wednesday November 18th, 2009 the City of Goleta met in a town hall setting with various citizens and community leaders to discuss the “State of the Goleta Valley Urban Forest Report.” The report discussed a project to be implemented in Goleta in 2010 and will provide refuge for new trees and wildlife in Goleta, California.

The relatively new city of Goleta, incorporated as a new city in 2002, has yet to create an urban forest reserve dedicated to the planting and preserving of trees in order to increase oxygen flow and provide habitats for various animal life. According to the City of Goleta, the city "has been named a Tree City, USA community by the Arbor Day Foundation to honor its commitment to community forestry. The City maintains over 6000 street trees in addition to the trees located in the over 500 acres of Parks and Open Spaces."

Because of this new designation, the city of Goleta is required to spend at least $2 per capita on trees and urban forestry. This comes as great news to the environmentally friendly citizens of Goleta and the surrounding city of Santa Barbara. The proposal was delayed by six months because of budget limitations from the state government, and was recently passed with funding from the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Other cities, large and small, already have programs similar to the Goleta Urban Forest Proposal and development in this area is necessary in order to achieve ecological and economical success as a city
