Small and modular nuclear power reactors (SMR) have been in study and design for over 50 years. These units are sealed and self-contained. They can be shipped and transported to a site and then up and running rapidly.
Hyperion Power has developed an SMR unit that measures approximately 1.5 meters by 2.5 meters that can be transported by any common means. The unit puts out 25 MWh of electricity, and will do so for between eight and 10 years. At the end of the unit’s life cycle, the SMR is returned to the manufacturer. A single installation can be used to satisfy the electrical needs of approximately 20,000 typically-sized American Homes, a large government facility, or hospital complex.
Hyperion Power has recently signed an agreement with Alternate Energy Holdings, Inc. (AEHI), of Eagle, Idaho. The agreement includes, marketing, licensing, and construction. Don Gillespie is the CEO of AEHI. Mr. Gillespie knows the marketplace for nuclear energy. It has been his business for 46 years. But nuclear energy is not the sole focus of the company. They are also have innovative solutions desalination (Green World Water™), solar energy, and green building products.
Don Gillespie has directed his company toward a course that will offer clean water to areas experience considerable drought, a consistent source of electricity where it has not been available, and in urban areas with solutions that add significantly to the base load. But the advantage of the teaming agreement between Hyperion Power and AEHI is in the combination of available technologies. As Don Gillespie says, “The Hyperion deal also adds another dimension to Green World Water, which can use the smaller 25 MWe reactor in place of the larger 1100 MWe and 650 MWe options currently being used by the company to produce potable water.”
AEHI is currently working through the final phase of a rezoning process in Idaho that would allow AEHI to build a nuclear power generating plant on an agricultural property. According to a recent study, the proposed plant is expected to create around 5,000 jobs through the construction phase and more than 1,000 jobs during operations. Pay levels for those jobs will average between $60,000 and $80,000 per year. The plant will, of course, produce much needed electricity to the grid. The 5,300-acre site is in Payette County and will allow the facility to be nearly hidden from the view of anyone not on the road to the facility.
Nuclear power currently provides about 20 percent of the electricity used in the United States. The clear message is that the demand for electricity is increasing, and most of it needs to be met by a technology that can consistently and without interruption provide electricity to the base load. If we do not want to increase the US dependency on foreign fossil fuels and inefficient coal plants then nuclear energy appears to be the most viable solution available today.
AEHI now gives us a couple of solutions to the increasing problem of providing for the world’s energy needs. One answer is a small system that is well suited for rural areas and smaller communities, that couples solutions for clean water and electricity. The second answer is a larger facility that provides base load energy to the grid, and can also supply clean drinking water.

Great! Just what we need -- nuclear plants in every community! NOT!
Actually, I think we do need that!
I was listening to the founder of Greenpeace the other day. He was asked if he would mind living near a nuclear power plant. He said "I wouldn't mind living inside a nuclear power plant." Nukes have been operating in the US for about 50 years without any known deaths caused by the nuke. You won't find that kind of safety record in a coal or fossil fuel plant. It is a safe and reliable energy source, with bad press.
I think the nuc. plants could work out great! And it would boost the economy by creating new jobs.
