Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's office issued a press release yesterday announcing that 396 skimmers, 334 of which are operational, have been deployed in the state. So far, the skimmers have collected a cumulative 659 gallons of debris, states the coastal skimmer activity report.
Jefferson Parish, for example, currently has 52 operational skimmers and has collected 84 gallons of oil. Louisiana is divided into parishes the way the rest of the US states are separated by counties.
Further, the governor has toured the state coastal areas including Port Fourchon, Grand Isle, Barataria Bay and Caminada Pass where he observed the strategic efforts of the National Guard to keep the oil out of the marshes. Land bridges, tiger dams (which zig zag, as seen here: http://www.usfloodcontrol.com) and other blockades are being deployed.
The governor's efforts come as citizens are reporting more and more sightings of oil along the coast. The state has set up a website to announce oil spottings: http://emergency.louisiana.gov/Releases/07122010-sightings.html. Hundreds of announcements report such sightings as a gray sheen or oil spotted in the marshes.
The skimming activity is being announced under an emergency alert heading on the Louisiana state website: www.emergency.louisiana.gov; and also www.emergency.louisiana.gov/Releases/07122010-skimmer.html.
