June 3, 2010 – As BP works a mile under the Gulf of Mexico to find a solution to stem the oil flowing from its ruptured well, the world is learning up close through new pictures just how big the environmental catastrophe grows. These photographs show oiled brown pelicans struggling against the thick reddish brown oil along the coast of East Grand Terre Island, Louisiana. The Island is east of Grand Isle and between Barataria Bay and the Gulf of Mexico.
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal flew over the area around Grand Isle today and then went to Grand Terre Island, where he has visited over the last few weeks. This trip verified the worsening conditions that the state and the country now face from the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
The Associated Press reports that Marianne Burke of the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says 35 oiled pelicans were reported Thursday in the area around Grand Isle. She says a biologist reported that between 25 and 30 had been caught, and rescue boats were returning to the islands.
Warning: Many people have found the condition of the birds in these pictures to be extremely distressing.

It would have been nice if the 2 arguing parties would have tried to stop it sooner instead of complaining about who should pay while we sat back and knew the environmental devestation that was going to be worse as the arguing continued instead of the action to help. At least thats how it was portrayed.
Louisiana just cant catch a break. It makes me sick to look at these pictures. As a Tampa,Florida resident I ache knowing this is soon going to touch our beautiful beaches as well. We all need to get out there and help save these animals and our beaches. It is not just responsibility of the govt and bp. It is our world, we need to save her!
This is the worsdt thing that has ever happened. Those poor birds, those poor animals, oh my God. What is happeneing to this country? We all better start praying
