Senator Dick Durbin announced today that the EPA and EPA Region 5 awarded almost $7 million to fund environmental programs in Illinois. The money comes from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Chicago will receive a million for projects to cut emissions and fuel usage from the city’s diesel fleet. 23 jobs will be created. Harmful diesel emissions to be reduced by 313 tons per year.
The Illinois EPA receives over $4 million, also to clean up diesel vehicles and equipment. 123 jobs gained. 675 diesel vehicles or engines will be affected.
The Illinois EPA also gets another ~$1,800,000 to fund water quality management planning, to help determine the nature, extent and cause of water pollution problems, as well as develop plans to solve those issues.
In addition, the EPA announced two Illinois groups as recipients of federal grants aimed at teaching kids about environmental issues.
Angelic Organics Learning Center in Caledonia, Illinois will receive over $18,000 to provide hands-on farming and food activities for junior high through high school students. (Note: Angelic Organics is also a biodynamic organic farm that provides tasty fruit and vegetable shares.)
Almost $40,000 was awarded to the Friends of the Fox River in Crystal Lake. Students and their teachers will collect data to better understand the biological, chemical and physical trends of the river.
