The Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement has stated that it wants public comments on an environmental impact report that it will use to pen a new stream buffer rule. President Barrack Obama’s administration wants to reverse a Bush-era rule critics have called ‘to friendly to the coal industry.’

The Office of Surface Mining says that it will hold meetings in Alabama, Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, New Mexico, West Virginia and Wyoming. The meetings will run from July 19th to July 29th. A definite meeting scheduled will be announced in the next few days.

Will these new regulations also protect streams in those seven states from highway construction waste ? Large numbers of "fills" are required for highways in these states and we all know the very same material is used in both. If pushed thru these regulations will severly curtail scores of development projects in these states. As Ms Jackson said "little or no" may not only concern mining valley fills but virtually all development in the area.
