Nassau County Executive Thomas R. Suozzi was honored as a Clean Air Champion for the Healthy Nassau “Green Your Commute” Program. This initiative actively promotes mass transit, ridesharing and a compressed work week among Nassau County government’s over 9,000 employees. 123 Nassau County employees opted into the four-day-work-week program. To honor those employees for reducing their carbon footprint, the Girl Scouts of Long Island presented a banner they decorated with 123 green footsteps.
The event marks the close of
“Commit to Cleaner Air" Week, which Nassau County has supported by shining a blue light over the dome of the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building each night since Monday. The blue is meant to represent the hope for clear, clean skies.
Representatives from Clean Air NY and the American Lung Association in New York also presented at the event, offering ways New Yorkers can continue to improve the local air quality and promote health.
“Nassau County residents who struggle to breathe every day are fortunate to have a County Executive as committed to clean air as County Executive Tom Suozzi,” said Michael Seilback, Vice President for Public Policy and Communications at the American Lung Association in New York. “The little things we all do can add up to make a big difference. Carpooling, using mass transit and turning off your vehicle engines instead of idling will help limit emissions and go a long way to protect lung health."
