Falmouth, Massachusetts is a lovely town on Cape Cod. Unfortunately residents have to boil town water before drinking it or using it to cook. If you are in town you might see residents filling up water jugs at the Pristine Spring water kiosk on Main Street in Falmouth.

According to the Cape Cod times and other media sources yesterday, June 16, 2010, the state Department of Environmental Protection, ordered all residents to boil town water before drinking it or using it for food preparation. Making matters worse for residents is that water department higher-ups might have known the E. coli was in the water before they told the state!

Let's look at how Falmouth residents and others who may find themselves in the same boat should handle this:

When there is an order to boil water you cannot drink water, make ice cubes, wash fruits and veggies, make coffee or any drink prepared with water, give your pets tap water, brush your teeth with non-boiled water, or make baby formula. Use bottled water or hand sanitizer rather than tap water to wash your hands. It isn't clear if you should shower or bathe but it seems that since water can get into our mouths, noses, etc. stay dirty for awhile!

You can wash your clothes, water your garden, and use a dishwasher if it has a sanitary cycle.

You probably know how to boil water but let's go over the proper procedures:

  •  Use the stove or microwave and bring the water to a good boil for one minute. That will kill the bacteria.
  • Cool the water down and pour it into a clean container.
  •  Put the container in the refrigerator until you are ready to use it.

You may have E.coli if you have diarrhea, cramps, nausea, headaches. look a bit yellow, or are extraordinarily tired. You might show symptoms in a few hours after being infectected or several days later. The symptoms can last more than two weeks.

Hi and thanks for reading. It seems that rising water and people not picking up after their animals are the cause.
