CRU hacked emails taint global warming researchers

The emails hacked from the Climate Research Unit (CRU) at the University of East Anglia look extremely damning. Andrew Bolt at the Herald Sun states that “ . . . the 1079 emails and 72 documents seem indeed evidence of a scandal involving most of the most prominent scientists pushing the man-made warming theory - a scandal that is one of the greatest in modern science.”

In one particularly jaw-dropping email, Phil Jones, the head of the CRU, purportedly wrote the following to Michael Mann of “hockey stick” fame

“I’ve just completed Mike’s Nature trick of adding in real temps to each series for the last 20 years (ie from 1981 onwards) and from 1961 for Keith’s to hide the decline.”

While a layperson may see the use of the words “trick” and “hide” as eyebrow-raising, Jones has another explanation. In a statement quoted in the journal Nature, Jones said, "The word 'trick' was used here colloquially as in a clever thing to do. It is ludicrous to suggest that it refers to anything untoward."

The Skeptical Science website tries to further explain that “Mike’s nature trick” is the technique of plotting recent instrumental data along with the reconstructed data. And, “hiding the decline” refers to “the method of reconciling the divergence problem where tree ring proxies diverge from modern instrumental temperature records after 1960.” Most laypeople, however, will not know if this explanation is reasonable or fair. (Read more here: http://www.skepticalscience.com/CRU-emails-hacked.htm )

But, the man-made global warming proponents have not yet explained away everything. The Wall Street Journal highlights this email purportedly between Phil Jones and Michael Mann:

“The two MMs have been after the CRU station data for years. If they ever hear there is a Freedom of Information Act now in the U.K., I think I'll delete the file rather than send to anyone. . . . We also have a data protection act, which I will hide behind."

The Wall Street Journal notes that the “two MMs” are Stephen McIntyre and Ross McKitrick, two Canadians who spent years and years seeking the raw data used in climate graphs. A brief history of Stephen McIntyre’s tireless research was highlighted here last month.

The Wall Street Journal editorial page concludes that “. . . we do now have hundreds of emails that give every appearance of testifying to concerted coordinated efforts by leading climatologists to fit the data to their conclusions while attempting to silence and discredit their critics.”

With all that is at stake -- one way or the other -- politicians and citizens need to rely on scientists who follow an unbiased scientific method. These leaked emails raise unsettling questions about the practices of these man-made global warming scientists.

climate change isn't happening you'd have to be a dumbass to believe it is

Are you STILL a blind follower of this Church of GW?

There needs to be a moratorium on any new legislation until this can be completely investigated. ANY and ALL research that has ANY connection at all to these so called "scientists", MUST be dismissed as false until proven correct!
These are not scientists but they are criminals for the fraud they have perpetrated on millions of the CGW Followers.

Take a look at this misconduct by the UEA Environmental Dean (now a UEA Vice Chancellor):
"I now have a leaked document which spells out some of the research
councils' thinking. I will get a copy over to CRU today. Please keep this
document within the CRU5, since it may compromise the source. NERC and
EPSRC are signed up. ESRC are not yet. Given the EPSRC stake, it will
certainly be be useful to get RAL etc involved. The funding might be
    2million per year."

I don't understand what the skeptics are complaining about. They have had access to the same data and they themselves are verifying it independently (linked from Roy Spencer's website). And even Spencer himself admits that right now is the warmest decade in at least the last 100 years. So how can skeptics claim that these emails prove some cover-up in data? It doesn't make sense. The skeptical scientists argue most of the warming is not due to man, whereas the skeptical media claims that there is no warming and there has been a big cover-up. The two claims are not in agreement.

These Scientist should never be given public funds again and an investigation should look for links into policy shaping and any investments that were empowered through their work. Thank you whistle blower, Geeks Rule.

Fantastic. Incredible. The data now has to be totally reevaluated. I think we do see real change in weather, but I am hesitant to blame human activity alonw. The earth has always had climate cycles.

Any one who thinks we are a big enough influence to change the climate had better look in a mirror and realize just how insignificant they really are.

I would rather spend all this GW money on cleaning up the garbage that is polluting the globe not some gas that is actually the gift of life.

    Amazing!

The data (emails) are right in your face and you still refuse to see the evidence.

These same scientists threatened my job as a scientist with the US Geological Survey because I attempted to publish a study showing with higher confidence that global temperature changes were completely natural caused solely by Earth's physical processes.

Additionally, these same scientists would not even discuss or refute the science and facts presented. Instead, they took two days to personally attacked me and my family.

I always knew that when man-made global climate change was showed to be insignificant that people would lose faith, note the word "FAITH", in science. But this event and exposure is way worse for the science community as a whole. Remember: "Truth is the daughter of Time (Francis Bacon)".

Several USGS scientists got fired for the same thing when discussing data manipulation for models developed for the Nevada Nuclear Test Site.

But no outcry and defense for

Where is the mainstream media on this, who are they afraid of?. This is bigger than Watergate ever was, and yet nothing in the news.

I think it goes to show the control the AGW camp has over the media. Perhaps we need a whistle blower to get to the bottom of this as well. I'm sure there are lots of emails going back and forth between media outlets, would love to see what they are saying. Very very sad.

    -------------------------------
Ludicrous my behind ! And what is this nonsense about a "layperson" ? I was born in Norwich and brought up on West Earlham housing estate literally adjacent to the UEA. I lived there for the first 24 years of my life. My wife lived further out in rural Norfolk prior to our marriage. Therefore, if there was ANY innocent Norwich or Norfolk "colloquial" meaning of the term "trick", trust me, I would know about it. There is NO such colloquial meaning of the word.
Nice try Mr. Jones - but no cigar !

It is colloquial in scientific communities, which I can attest to---we even use it in mathematics, where I assure you everything has been proven rigorously. Cheers!
