Forget Black Friday - Cyber Monday is the new big shopping day

Thanksgiving means turkey, family, pumpkin pie, and traditionally, day-after-Thanksgiving shopping trips.  Often, this day (dubbed "Black Friday") begins as early as 4am with shoppers trying to snag deals and get their Christmas shopping done early.   In the last few years, however, Cyber Monday - the day of great online deals and proliferous web-shopping - has come to be as important a shopping day as Black Friday.

The Wall Street Journal predicted strong showings from Monday's consumers, with shoppers spending $595 million dollars online on Black Friday, an increase of 11% over the previous year.  It is expected that Cyber Monday sales could reach $900 million.

According to the statistics, Cyber Monday is the 3rd largest shopping day of the year.  Mobile apps, Ebay, Paypal, and Amazon.com all report increased traffic on Cyber Monday and are increasing promotions and sales accordingly.  For shoppers looking to snag a deal online - and consumers who have been saving all year and are perhaps feeling the shoppers' itch, stay savvy and you may snag an excellent deal in one of this year's online sales.

Be cautious, however, of web scams and frauds - as the holidays and heavy-shopping days are also markets for identity thefts and online scams. Fox News reports the 12 most common scams of online shopping, including charity phising, online identity theft, fake e-cards, and password robbery.  Enjoy the holiday shopping scene - online or in a shopping center - and good luck snagging deals on holiday gifts. But be cautious of pick-pocketers and online scams.
