When speaking to students and recent grads, I always mention three traits hiring managers seek: passion, enthusiasm and a willingness to learn. However, there’s a fourth I’d like to add: leadership qualities.

There’s an old saying that “leaders are born, not made.” However, Lisa Orrell, author of “Millennials Into Leadership: The Ultimate Guide for Gen Y’s Aspiring to Be Effective, Respected, Young Leaders at Work,” and I disagree with this statement—and her new book gives you all the tools to help you get there.

With Gen Y flooding the workforce, they will quickly outnumber the baby boomers and move up the ranks faster than Gen X did. However, as Orrell accurately states, tenure does not a manager (or leader) make.

Millennials Into Leadership” is chock full of easily-digestible lists, including:

  • 20 Ways Millennials Will Change the Workforce (courtesy of Ryan Healy)
  • Six Steps to Thinking Like a Leader
  • 23 Key Differences Between a Leadership Mindset & Manager Mindset
  • Seven Ironclad Attributes of an Exceptional Leader
  • 14 Infallible Communication Strategies for Effective Leaders
  • 13 Leadership Tips for Problem Solving
  • 41 Expert Leadership Tips: Successful Senior Executives Share Their Advice
  • Four Steps to Creating Your Personal Leadership Brand
  • Six Traits That Define Your Leadership Style
  • And more!

Orrell has spent the majority of her career coaching executives and companies about Gen Y. However, she decided to turn her focus toward members of Gen Y themselves because of the big role they’re going to play in the workplace in the coming years and decades.

If you want to learn how to become an “effective, respected, young leader,” I highly recommend picking up a copy of the 168-page “Millennials Into Leadership.” It’s a quick read, but I guarantee you’ll gain an immense amount of knowledge and discover the leader in you.
