Ask Heather: First meeting with a recruiter, phone interviews

Have a question about finding, landing or succeeding at internships or entry-level jobs? E-mail them to entrylevelexaminer@gmail.com to be included in an upcoming “Ask Heather.”

Q: What do you wear when meeting for the first time with a recruiter? Do you treat it like an interview and come in full suit garb, or can you leave the jacket at home?

A: Excellent question! Your first meeting with a recruiter is your first interview. After all, the hiring organization is paying his or her tab. So, definitely treat the opportunity as an interview.

For more information about working with recruiters, read “Know someone on the inside by working with a recruiter.” For more information about interview attire, read the five-part series “Dress for success.”

Q: I know phone interviews are not supposed to be done on cell phones, but that’s all I have. Suggestions?

A: Do you have any friends or family in the area that will allow you to use their landline for the call? The last thing you want is a dropped call. Can you recover from it? Probably. Do you want to put yourself in a situation where you have to? Not at all!

Q: If I’m not interested in the position any longer after the first interview, should I let the company know? If so, how should I do it?

A: You should absolutely let them know! I always say to never burn a bridge—you never know when your paths might cross again.

For situations like this, even though it will likely feel awkward to you, I recommend calling. Thank the individual for the opportunity to interview with their fine organization, but then explain you are no longer interested in pursuing the position. Finally, wish him or her luck in finding the best candidate. If you know someone who might be a good fit, make the suggestion! I would then follow-up via e-mail reiterating your conversation so they have it in writing.
