'Precious' sets box office record for earnings per cinema

"Precious" set a record for movie earnings.
Lionsgate

According to Access Hollywood, the new movie "Precious" may have set a box office record in its debut in 18 theaters. The film, produced by Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry, grossed an astounding $1.8 million in only 18 theaters. By comparison, if it kept this per screen average and debuted in 1,000 theaters, we would be looking at a $100 million film.

By all estimates, the movie looks to have broken to record for highest per-cinema average in history for a film debuting in over 10 theaters. "Precious" also has numerous glowing reviews going for it, in addition to some Oscar buzz for both Mo'nique and newcomer Gabourey Sibide.

In terms of overall earnings, Disney's new version of "A Christmas Carol" brought in $31 million. In comparison, though, it only averaged a little more than $8,000 a cinema.

Are you planning on seeing "Precious?" Let me know!

Let me just say that as a black man I was a little skeptical about seeing this movie. I have to drive an hour and half from Milwaukee to Chicago to see it. It was well worth the drive. Mo'Nique gives a performance that is truly unbelievable and definitley worthy of an Oscar nomination and win. Gabbie does an excellent job portraying Precious as well and also deserves an Oscar consideration. I've seen movies with less of a dramatic performance be nominated and win Oscars. It's a great movie. SEE IT

This movie was an emotional rollercoaster that is well worth the money. I loved it and was astounded by how phenomenal Mo'nique's acting was... especially at the end of the movie. Go see it! The only person they could've done without in the movie is Mariah Carey. When will she realize that acting isn't her calling? lol

Saw it. Loved it!!! I am not a Monique fan but I watched interview with her and decided to give the movie a chance because it was Gabbie's debut. I usually don't like tear-jerker movies but this one is a keeper. Everybody should see this movie. VERY EMOTIONAL.

don't be afraid to see this movie due to heavy emotional content. it is sometimes hilariously funny. when i saw it i sat next to 2 of the producers who were on the floor laughing (not literal). It's brilliant. Lee Daniels is brilliant and always has been. He deserves Oscar as does Monique and Gabby. See it. It just goes to show what is possible with little money compared to H'wood flick.

I waited with anticipation for Precious to be released in Columbus, Ohio and was saddened to discover that it did not come here. I just found out today that it was only released in 18 theatres. With the raving reviews it is not receiving I hope that they will be showing it in more theatres. Yes, to answer you question, I would love to see it.

I have seen this movie in the bog apple at an AMC Theater (I thought the movie would be over by the time I got to it as I have to ride the escalator up five times to get to it.

Off the scale performances by EVERYONE in this movie. Didn't even realize Lenny Kravitz & Scherrie Shepperd are in the movie.

Mariah (in her limited role) truly shines and BARELY looks like herself.

KUDOS to EVERYONE in and involved with the movie.
