Russell Brand returns as host of the MTV Video Music Awards.
The MTV Video Music Awards are tonight, and maybe I'm wrong, but they don't seem to generate the excitement that they used to.
Russell Brand is back for his second stint as host of the awards. Personally, I'm thinking they're giving him a do-over after a hokey and almost-embarrasing performance last year. You have to wonder why they would have him back for another shot. Aren't there any overbearing, annoying, not funny Americans who could have done this job? It's just my opinion, but he makes much maligned comedian Dane Cook look like a comedic genius.
From a musical perspective, the field of videos is varied and impressive. And Detroit is pretty nicely represented this year.
Any city would be proud to have even one nominee at the still presitigious awards. But Detroit has at least three that I can find. Okay, they are all for Eminem, and for the same song, but hey, at least we're represented. And who knows, maybe his good friend Sacha Baron Cohen will show up as Ali G and put his genitals in Marshall Mathers face for our viewing pleasure.
Eminem's pop icon and celebrity bashing song "We Made You" is nominated in three categories: Best Male Video, Best Hip Hop Video and Video of the Year. I'm a little tired of him slamming other celebrities for being famous, when he himself is where he is because of the same social phenomenon. But, the video is fun, funny and very well produced and directed.
Since the show is repeated on MTV ad nauseum, I don't think the attaction to the event is what it used to be. Then again, you never know what might happen. My DVR is set, just in case.
