Last night, when I posted my previous article about the MTV Video Music Awards on Current.com I got a couple of dozen reaction responses. Those comments were very diverse, but I was surprised by how many young people were more negative about the music content of the VMA's than how awful Russell Brand is, not only as the host, but as a comedian in general.
In fact, many of the posters think that Russell Brand is edgy, political and funny. Okay, we'll just have to agree to disagree and I alone will relish in the fact that I know I'm right.
Following are some of my observations and comments about last night's award show:
1) Kanye West is a classless ass. Perhaps he took his lead from Representative Joe Wilson. (West rudely interrupted Taylor Swift as she was accepting her Best Female Video award.)
2) Madonna can't tell a story.
3) Beyonce Knolls is a class act (and did deserve the Video of the Year). (Beyonce gave up her acceptance speech time to allow Taylor Swift to finish hers.)
4) Taylor Swift is a gracious and seemingly humble young woman.
5) I had had enough of Michael Jackson before he died. (Although the live dancers in front of the video screen Michael was pretty cool.)
6) Pink's performance was amazing. I was so impressed with the spectacle, and the fact that she delivered her song well while doing amazing trapeze choreography. Sure it was sort of like a circus trick. Oh wait, it WAS a circus trick.
7) Eminem wins Best Hip Hop video for his celebrity-slamming song "We Made You." We made him.
8) Russell Brand isn't funny, a good communicator, charismatic or interesting. Bring Jack Black back.
I guess, as some of the young "music lovers" have informed me, the MTV Video Music Awards show has become a product produced primarily by middle-aged men trying to look hip. And yet it's still a relatively entertaining evening with some memorable (albeit mainstream) musical performances.
And if the only thing they have going for them to make it hipper and edgier is Russell Brand...they're screwed.
