Comedian Artie Lange slams Detroit on Howard Stern Show

Hopefully Artie Lange won't discover Detroit's great restaurants.

First, let me say that I really like Artie Lange. He's remarkably funny and entertaining, both as a stand-up comedian and as the funny sidekick of Howard Stern on his satellite radio program. But, when he’s not trying to be funny, he should make sure he knows what he’s talking about before he opens his big fat mouth.

On today's Howard Stern Show, Howard was discussing Jay Leno's free comedy concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills on April 7th. Howard is not a big Leno fan, and the two have been in an on-air feud for many years, partially as a result of Jay snatching away Stuttering John Melendez to be the Tonight Show announcer. Howard believes that Jay is really doing this free concert to keep himself in the limelight and promote his new prime time comedy variety show which airs in the fall on NBC.

Howard went on to discuss the city of Detroit and his days as a radio personality at WWWW-FM in the late seventies. After pointing out the culture shock of driving down

Jefferson Avenue
from downtown Detroit to the Grosse Pointes, the bloated Artie Lange chimed in that he recently performed in Detroit and that the downtown area was "nothing more than General Motors and a bunch of  burned out houses." Where in hell was Artie? Not in the downtown Detroit that I’m in every day.

The city certainly has its problems and issues, but even the drive down Jefferson that Howard referred to has improved over the years with new housing and condo developments and the stores and amenities that the people who live there require.

I understand exaggerating and enhancing for comedy's sake, but Artie was just making an ill informed comment about a city which doesn't really need to be kicked when it's down. Especially not with such an asinine untruth.

The feud aside, Jay is coming to the Detroit area to perform and people who generally couldn't afford the tickets to a show at the Palace may be able to attend. Sure, he may be looking to promote his future projects, but so does Stern. And no one pats themselves on the back more than the self-proclaimed King of All Media.

Artie, stick to the funny, where the truth is not required.

are you kidding me? all artie has to do is listen to any Detroit area talk radio show, or read local comments from our surburban neighbors, or read many of the editorials printed in our local media and get all the negative material he needs. Most of his comments probably is based on what he reads and hears from local people.

I have to agree with you, Detroiut is not as bad as it all seems to others outside of the city. Yes I do agree that we have our share of problems, but what Big city doesn't? Usually when the news is reported it is labeled as
"Suburban Detroit" what I always disagreed with. But how many people know of Grosse Pointe, or other of the larger suburbs surrounding Detroit that don't live here.

The issue, Tony, was that what he said he claimed was based on a recent visit here..and it was B.S. At least local people's complaints are more likely based on fact.

On the other hand, slamming Arte's 'big fat mouth' is merely a sucker punch to a dude with a weight problem. Lange is from Jersey--he knows from urban s**t-holes. I'm Detroit born and bred and have no trouble admitting that the city has become, in my lifetime, a national disgrace. Bragging about a handful of casinos or a strip of Jefferson is about as honest as the Downtown Development Authority installing awnings on abandoned buildings to fool out-of-towners into thinking they were occupied. What year was that again?

I heard the actual broadcast. Howard made the most negative comments about Detroit including but not limited to referring to it as a "ghetto." Artie simply added one or two comments to support Howard's truthful description of Detroit, then and now. I lived in Detroit for three years, and have bad experiences every time I return (most recently at a Nikelback concert where a veteran DPD officer working security informed my wife that "we don't need your money. Take your money and go home." Detroit is a cesspool. Somebody better wake up and say what needs to be said instead of being apologists who allow the cesspool to not only continue, but also continue getting worse. Someone please name another major city in this country where visiting dignitaries must be bussed twenty miles or more OUT OF THE CITY to find any semblance of shopping. The city died the day Hudson's closed. The smell that pervades the entire city is the smell of rotting corpses. What a dump.

That's funny, I go there for the auto show and the electronic music festival (movement) every year and always have a blast. I think calling it a dump is a little obtuse considering downtown alone is a national architectural treasure chest. Problem is obtuse people don't appreciate stuff like that. They just want to move to a quiet suburb and fall asleep for the rest of their life.
