With online video giant YouTube rapidly filling up its music video catalog, Hulu, the web-TV site, has announced a partnership with EMI. The record will partner with Hulu to showcase music videos and concert footage for a number of EMI’s artists.  One of the first examples of the new venture can be seen on the new mini-site devoted to Norah Jones.  The site features video clips and excerpts from Jones’ live performances.

Hulu, who adds short commercials at the front of the music videos, also announced that it will utilize these music sites to drive its viewers to TV episodes and movies on Hulu that have music themes, such as the documentary on the Flaming Lips.

Not to be outdone by YouTube and Hulu, Sony and Universal have formed a joint venture and will launch the music video site Vevo on December 8th. While all of the online promotional efforts are laudable and seem to hint that the music industry has finally come to grips with the power of the Internet, one has to wonder what took them so long to join the 21st Century.
