At some point this Friday night, you’ll see a line of well-dressed people outside in the cold waiting to be picked to get into whatever club is hot at the moment. Many will be underdressed for 20 degree weather, some will see the their entrance into the club as way more meaningful than it actually is, but all will be missing out on one of the best places in the DC area to shake your thang.
Created as a dance night where attitude is checked at the door, Fatback was conceived by DJs Patrick White and Sean Peoples as a venue where people could focus solely on the music. “My favorite thing about Fatback is the total lack of pretense,” says White. “Fashion and politics and exclusivity and even hipster posturing all take a back seat to getting sweaty and dancing like no one's watching.”
Fatback takes place the third Friday of every month at the Red Lounge. Originally at another space, the quality of the music and the affectation-free spirit meant they would need a bigger site. The move has proven so successful that they’ve expanded within the Red Lounge. “We just added another dimension to the whole affair,” said White. “Downstairs, in the kitchen of the Red Lounge we're playing the stickiest slow jams ever made.”
What separates Fatback from other DJ nights around the city is the wide range of music you’ll hear. Says White, “We play everything from fast paced Northern soul to gritty Southern funk to house to West African drumming to Caribbean oldies and more. The beauty of the night is that you never know what's coming. You just know it's going to make you move.”
Fatback is at Red Lounge (2013 14th St at U) the third Friday of every month. Admission is free.
