CNN’s Anderson Cooper co-hosted this morning’s “Live with Regis & Kelly”. During the live taping Cooper said when he heard President Obama had won the Nobel Peace Prize, he thought that it “was a joke”. He went on to make joke himself stating that Regis and Kelly were on the list to win the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Joking aside the reactions to Obama as the recipient of this years Nobel prize have been mixed. The panel who decides who is awarded said Obama was chosen for his current efforts towards worl peace and nuclear disarmament. Although the committee had chosen Obama, they decided to wait until morning to let the President know of their decision. Committee chairman Thorbjoern Jagland said "Waking up a President in the middle of the night, this isn't really something you do”.
The President himself received the news at 6 am this morning. Many perceive the award as a slap in the face of former President Bush for his military actions following September 11 attacks.
Jagland said “You have to remember that the world has been in a pretty dangerous phase,. And anybody who can contribute to getting the world out of this situation deserves a Nobel Peace Prize."

The timing is especially ironic when one considers President Obama is planning to send 40,000 additional troops to Afghanistan and has not redeployed troops out of Iraq.
COMPLETELY agree....and isn't this all a bit premature? I'm reading about astonishment, suprise and even outrage from other countries. Obama's spirit aside, "one might embody greatness" but doesn't one have to show the fruits of one's labors before a prize of such magnitude is awarded?
As did Anderson Cooper, I thought Obama's receiving the Nobel Peace Prize was a joke - And then I received a Huffington Post article, also stating that he'd won this much coveted prize.....THEN, I read another article stating that it was "possibly a bit premature". Ya think?
I am glad Obama won this...premature or not.
he does not deserve this award...at least not at this time. He just happens to be the first black president in the US, and although hopes are high for the "changes" he wants to make, he has yet to actually accomplish much of anything yet!This is beyond premature. There is a chance that he could prove himself worthy of such an award in the future, but I think it's wrong of him if he doesn't gracefully decline.

I can’t agree with my colleagues here on CONTENTIONS that a) Barack Obama should reject the Nobel Peace Prize or b) be embarrassed by it. The Nobel Committee chose him wisely because he does, in fact, represent the organization’s highest ideals.

So just who do I have to screw to get one? Certainly not Bill! I mean I have standards, they're mighty low (after all, I am still married to Bill), but I DO have standards!
It just shows that the Nobel does not mean anything. Obviously the Nobel Peace Prize is just political patronage for Socialist Leftist. I first had my suspicions when it was given to Yasser Arafat. Even Gorbachev gets the peace prize even though he did exactly what GW Bush did in Afghanistan. Except when Bush does it he is a monster because he did not do it for Socialist leaning reasons. Then there is Betty Williams who said “Right now, I could kill George Bush” and she said it at a Women’s Peace Conference of all things. The Nobel means nothing. Obama probably was only considered because he is the only man who is even close to destroying America, something no terrorist, the Soviet Union, Hitler or any other country could accomplish in over 200 years.
Let's see...nominations closed February 1st....giving Obama just 11 days in office.

Its amazing to witness how the Nobel prize has degenerated from an award of merit to a hollow footnote awarded by tools for the promulgation of a political agenda.
Now even the Nobel Prize Committee has an affirmative action program. Obama hasn't accomplished one thing, just given a lot of slick speeches. If Obama were white, he wouldn't even have been considered for the prize. We all know that, right?

This is the most ridiculous thing ever and I voted for him. I wish they would not have done this. I makes the committee look like morons and also will make President Obama the object of many jokes. He didn't deserve it and they should have chosen someone that had done something. This makes the Peace Prize a joke. Shame on them.
Reagan deserved it and I'm a registered Democrat. Gore did not deserve it either. It should be awarded to people that have DONE SOMETHING, not to people that they hope will do something. It cheapens the award for all.

You misrepresented the Cooper thing. He was honestly saying he thought someone was kidding around when he first heard, not insulting the decision as ridiculous. Later they were discussing Letterman's show last night and he told Kelly that Letterman had said her and Regis' chemistry was so good they's win a nobel prize in chemistry.

After almost two years, Obama is still laughing about his selection for the Nobel "Peace" Prize. Saying "Hey, it was a joke, right? nobody can be that stupid to give an award in advance ! It's like giving the prize to a 1 week old baby ! " (which , no doubt would have been more deserving).
