Sometimes it's impossible to trace the source of a ridiculous rumor.

This one, however, is linked to a story in People magazine.

But it's still ridiculous.

On Monday, Twitter briefly exploded with tweets about Matthew McConaughey and Cameron Diaz nearly being eaten alive at a Santa Monica beach that is a popular hangout for surfing celebrities.

The rumors, of course, are just that. Although McConaughey and Diaz do frequent the beach, they were not eaten or bitten by a shark.

What People magazine reported this week is that photos of an approximately 10 foot-long great white shark were taken at the southern California beach.

"People are taking this seriously," John Philbin, surfer and actor, tells People. "It's kept more than a few people out of the water this week."

To date, no celebrities have been eaten by the shark in question.

But I bet the shark has at least thought about it.
