Watch what you Tweet - Twitter could get you sued. One Chicago renter is find this out the hard way. Reportedly on May 12th Amanda Bonnen mentioned her "moldy apartment" to her 20 followers and now her property manager is taking her to court.
The libel complaint comes from this May 12th Twitter post: "Who said sleeping in a moldy apartment was bad for you? Horizon realty thinks it's okay."
According to the complaint filed in Cook County court today, Bonnen "maliciously and wrongfully published the false and defamatory Tweet on Twitter, thereby allowing the Tweet to be distributed throughout the world."
Horizon Group Management's complaint says the claim of mold is false and seeks is seeking $50,000 and court costs. The management company has yet provide proof that Ms. Bonnen's claims are false.
Unlike the “first” Twitter lawsuit involving Courtney Love this will be the first time the lawsuit solely involves the site. Love’s libel complaint involved another social networking site Myspace.com.
There does seem to be a second side to this story. Horizon says Bonnen's comments were only discovered in the course of due diligence related to a class-action lawsuit she filed for "alleged Chicago Residential Landlord Tenant Ordinance (RLTO) violations."
Amanda Bonnen's Twitter account has been closed. It will be interesting to see how this one plays out. If you are interested in reading the complaint you can find it here.
Who knew less than 140 characters could potentially cost more than $50,000 and a day in court?
