Governor Schwarzenegger met with local officials to discuss budget options and impacts on local communities.
Last week the California Sierra Club and 24 other environmental organizations signed a letter opposing California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's proposal to extend offshore oil drilling leases on the California Coast off Santa Barbara, supposedly to help fill the $19 billion hole in the California State budget crisis.
(As of now, according to Schwarzenegger, the State of California will cease to operate for lack of revenue, by the end of July, 2009, if the legislature doesn't pass a budget full of cuts and, measures for increasing revenue without new taxation, as of June 15th this year, 2009.)
Various reports cite a possible $1.8 billion in increased state revenue, which would, at first, seem to go a long way towards easing California's pain, but, that $1.8 billion is really $1.8 billion---maybe, over 13 years time, between now and the year 2022, when, supposedly, Houston-based Plains Exploration and Oil Production Company will stop drilling.
How much would the State of California get, to solve its budget crisis this year? One hundred million dollars, which is not going to fill much of a $19 billion hole.
Meanwhile, a guest on today's KPFA Radio Morning Show, 06.03.2009, reported that California is the only state in the union that does not tax oil drilling profits, and that, doing so could generate $1 billion, 1/19th of this year's budget shortfall, this year.
I can't be the only one who's sick and tired of listening to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Governor Greenwash, spew about clean coal, emissions free nuclear power, electric cars, or two big new hydroelectric dams he wants to build, all in the name of halting catastrophic climate change. And now---about filling the state's $19 billion dollar budget hole with $100 million for new offshore oil drilling leases, even as he resists taxing extant oil drilling in California, and, instead, proposes radically hiking community college tuition, cutting mental health and HIV services, selling off public assets, and closing most of the state's public parks.
If it weren't for Schwarzenegger's emissions free nuclear wet dream, I'd be expecting him to propose a few clean coal-powered uranium mines in Death Valley Monument before the end of the week.

Same old baloney..They continue to oppress those in need in the name of some BS budget. The mentally ill suffer horribly and their life expectancy is actually reduced due to lack of care. Money is more valuable than human life and we prove it every day in this country......
When the State of California ceases to operate the savings will be roughly $1 billion every two days. Fifty days later the budget is balanced. One hundred days later California has a rainy day fund. This is the most painless solution. I like it.
He refuses to cut off ALL funding to illegal aliens. He also won't tax REMITTENCE MONEY (to include all participating banks/businesses & wiring services), He won't bill the nation of origin for services rendered to illegal aliens. He won't end the tax breaks of ALL corporations who: Offshore, outsource & use all manner of visa workers & illegal aliens. He won't tarrif foreign goods. He won't impose extraction fees on oil companies. He won't end the tax-exempt status or tax breaks of ALL churches, nonprofits, foundations who support the illegal alien agenda.--In short, I find him and his fellow (shysters) to lack any fiber of common sense whatsoever. How can he and his fellow shysters in our government continue to cry about what do do when all they have to do is use common sense.
@George I like it.... Let the government take an unpaid vacation. This is the best idea I've heard in a long time. Letting civilized people govern themselves will improve the economy.
The offshore oil indusry has an awsome record for the last 12 years off the CA coast. Both Ca. and the MMS (Minerals Managment Agency) have incridable managing and monitering of all platforms off the CA coast. There are huge reserves available to us and CA gets a high percentage of every barrel brought to shore before taxing along with the MMS.This is part of the lease and use agreement. This is a fantastic income for this state and must be utilized to help these budgets along.
I think Schwarzenegger should uphold the rule of law and govern by the rules set forth by the United States Constitution as he swore he would with his oath of office.
Back in the sixties the government came into the schools and brainwashed us with the idea we needed to control the population because it was rising so fast. They said the roads would become crowded and we would run out of things like water.
They unleashed abortions, birth control pills, and other forms of Family Planning.
To allow the country to be over run with the criminals in businesses illegal labor while the criminals in the government aid and abet the invasion is a travesty against mankind.
They have seen to it our children were killed to control the population at the same time allowing the world to export their population problems here.
What about our sacrifices, many made against our will?????
P.S. We still haven't recovered from the last time the criminals in business were allowed to bring in t
