Sarah Palin calls Newsweek cover photo of her in running gear sexist

Sarah Palin on the cover of Newsweek Magazine in her running gear

It wasn't all that long ago that Sarah Palin was proud to call herself a marathon runner, and in fact posed for a number of photos for Runner's World Magazine in her running gear.

One of those images has now turned up on the cover of Newsweek Magazine just as the former Alaskan Governor is going out on her new book tour.

The outraged Palin posted a brief but critical message on her Facebook Page:

"the choice of photo for the cover of this week's Newsweek is unfortunate. When it comes to Sarah Palin, this "news" magazine has relished focusing on the irrelevant rather than the relevant. The Runner's World magazine one-page profile for which this photo was taken was all about health and fitness - a subject to which I am devoted and which is critically important to this nation. The out-of-context Newsweek approach is sexist and oh-so-expected by now. If anyone can learn anything from it: it shows why you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, gender, or color of skin. The media will do anything to draw attention - even if out of context"

Newsweek Editor Jon Meacham responded to Palin by saying:

"We chose the most interesting image available to us to illustrate the theme of the cover, which is what we always try to do,” Meacham said. "We apply the same test to photographs of any public figure, male or female: does the image convey what we are saying? That is a gender-neutral standard."

Palin is the one who's sexist, having posed for the picture in the first place. Clearly not a shot of her actually running a marathon, in which case shorts would be appropriate. Instead, a photo op, taken inside a well-appointed office, in full make up and coiffed hair, not a drop of sweat, glamor pose, leaning on a flag draped over a chair. And the point of the shorts in this "context", regardless of publication? Palin used her sex to sell herself.

Hmmm, I disagree- no one is going to do a photo shoot all sweated up. I think Newsweek did use this pic out of context only because the article has nothing to do with her exercise program, but rather her political stance. I am not a fan of Palin's politics, only because I don't think she knows enough, but I don't agree that she sold sex- the picture was for Runner's World where it would be totally appropriate, I blame that magazine for selling it to Newsweek who continually buries this woman farther into the ground. Whether or not I agree with her views, she is still a person and doesn't deserve the extreme behavior people and magazines are putting out.
