A 23-year-old man from Boston collapsed at the 25th-mile marker of the Baltimore Marathon.
The man was taken to the hospital with a a core body temperature of 107 or 108 degrees and was pronounced dead a few hours later.
The local medical examiner is scheduled to perform the autopsy today to try to determine the cause of death.
"We are heartbroken about it and it puts a sad note on an otherwise great day for Baltimore," said Lee Corrigan, the event organizer. "Our hearts go out to him and his family," he added.
This is the second time a runner has died in the race's nine-year history. A brain aneurysm apparently claimed the life of a participant in the first year of the race, Corrigan said.
It is very uncommon for runners to die during a marathon---some studies have suggested a rate 1 death per 50,000 runners.
This marks the second weekend of deadly running.
Last weekend two runners died at the recent Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon in San Jose.
