July 2010 brought the 26th annual Shawnee Mission Triathlon to Shawnee Mission Park (Shawnee, KS). This is a return attempt from a canceled race in 2009 due to severe weather.
The SMP Triathlon is a local favorite catering to the triathletes by closing the park and limiting vehicle interference. Many regard the event and organizers as top notch for the region. Racers were chomping at the bit to get 2010 under way!
Little did everyone know was that Mother Nature wasn't going to miss the race, either. For a second year in a row, severe weather forced an early finish to the race. Around 8:30am (first wave started at 7:00am) the race was shut down due to nearby lightening strikes. Race organizers held off as long as safely possible, but the weather would not be stopped.
Weather.com missed the call with the forecast on Saturday. Weather.com called for PM thunderstorms and unfortunately, the weather decided to show up early.
Onlineraceresults.com listed the event, but no results were posted as of 7/12/10 at 9am. Some long course athletes made it to the run and completed the course, but the race was shut down prior to them reaching the finish line so results were not tallied. Some short course athletes with later heat start times only made the swim.
Weather has not treated JCPRD events well this season with Heritage Park Triathlon being converted to a Duathlon due to bacteria issues from rain runoff.
Enter Cycle City and Midwest Mayhem on July 18, 2010. From the event organizers, "News and Updates - Mother Nature has once again forced the Shawnee Mission Park Triathlon to be Canceled! We would like to once again extend an offer for those athletes who weren't able to compete today! Bring your bib number and/or proof of registration to one of the three packet pick-up locations listed below and you will receive Early Bird Pricing with no late fees! This offer is not valid if you're attempting to register online and you must be present at one of the packet pick-up locations! This is a $30 savings if you register as an individual and a $50 savings if you're registering as a team. You must have your bib number and/or proof of registration to be eligible! This is great venue for a race with a lot of fun stuff going on!"
