The Woodlands, Texas -- Ironman, the iconic 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run triathlon is coming to Texas. The Woodlands will play host to the Memorial Herman Ironman Texas on May 21, 2011. This will be the World Triathlon Corporation's (WTC) first Ironman event in the Lone Star State and one of 23 races worldwide to qualify competitors for the championship race in Kona, Hawaii.

Race entry begins Friday, June 25, 2010 at 1:00 PM (ET). Entries are $600. Enter the race here.

As reported here yesterday, The Woodlands Board of Directors voted today in favor of paying $30,000 to the WTC for the righ to host the race. In exchange, the organizers have pledged to provide $100,000 in donations to local charities.

According to Ultimate Woodlands, a community news website, “It will have a significant impact on The Woodlands,” said Bruce Tough, chairman of The Woodlands Township board. “It's a prime event to have and host and will bring national and global attention to community. It is a signature event that will be televised and will involve multi-government agencies, but it’s home will be here in The Woodlands."

The Ironman event is expected to attract 2,500 participants from all 50 states and 25 counties during the third weekend in May and generate about $16 million to the local economy for airlines, hotel rooms, food and beverage sales, sightseeing, entertainment and shopping, said Nick Wolda, president of The Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau.

According to the IronmanTexas website, the athletes will begin with a 2.4-mile swim in Lake Woodlands that begins at North Shore Park and finishes at Town Green Park. Next is a 112-mile bike course that will take participants west through The Woodlands before heading north. The bike portion is followed by a 26.2-mile run course entirely within The Woodlands concluding on Market Street.

Course maps are not yet available.
