Alcatraz Wars, accusations of deception

SAN DIEGO -- Some said a skirmish was bound to happen but few thought it would so soon, or in this way. In the midst of what has become a highly competive San Francisco triathlon market, today the owners of the famed Escape from Alcatraz triathlon responded to emails sent by USA Triathlon advertising registration for an "Alcatraz Race" as an attempt by the race's former director to deceive triathletes into thinking they were registering for the 29-year-old iconic race.

This just weeks after IMG Worldwide, the owner of the Escape from Alcatraz, replaced Tri-California as race director with Premier Event Management. Both companies were quick to announce new races either involving a similar race course or offering qualifying entry to the famed race bringing the total number of races centred on the island to three.

Escape from Alcatraz Tweeted their accusation with a link to their website. The site says,

ATTENTION!

If you received an email today from USA Triathlon announcing registration for an "Alcatraz Race," this is NOT the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

This is a race that as been designed by TriCalifornia to intentionally deceive you into believing it is the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon and paying money to their company.

TriCalifornia is in no way affiliated with the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon.

The lottery for the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon will open here on this Official Event Website on December 1, 2009.

Thank you, Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon Event Staff

In response, Terry Davis, the owner of TriCalifornia said by telephone, "We're not trying to decieve anybody. We want to promote our race, the Alcatraz Triathlon, on August 29. I'm disappointed by what they said. We just want to focus on putting on a qualify event as part of the Tri-California Series."
