A Lexus or a Tesla Motors Roadster?

Most people probably all know the price of a Tesla Motors Roadster.  How about the new hybrid Lexus LS 600h?

The gist is that sometimes company pricing makes little sense.  In the midst of this economical reality, some cars still defy gravity.  Ultimately, you come to expect a high end electric vehicle, EV such as the Tesla Motors Roadster to cost what it does about $110,000.  But would you pay the same price of a hybrid, HEV Lexus, namely the LS 600h?

What $110,000 Buys You.  With a $110,000 in your budget, the choice of cars is wide.  For those wanting more eco-green friendly alternatives, the choices narrows down to Tesla Motors, Commuter Cars and now, the Lexus LS 600h.  So what do you get for $108,000?  An updated HEV Lexus.

This mid-sized "luxury" sedan is Toyota's hails flagship hybrid model.  But the harder question for consumers will be, is the new HEV Lexus worth more than a quarter of the regular price?

Considering the new cars due to hit the market soon, the Fisker Karma plug-in hybrid, PHEV for over $80,000, the up and coming Tesla Motors Model S that should retail around $50,000 as well as Fisker's next PHEV, the Nina which should sell in the vicinities of $30,000, Toyota is aiming high?  Is a hybrid Lexus worth that much more?   Toyota is taking on a huge gambit selling a "luxury" hybrid version at that price.

The LS600h gets worse overall fuel economy than the LS460 ICE version... the performance is the same given the fact that the added weight cancels out the increased HP advantage.

The LS600h gets 20mpg... is that sound like a hybrid?

Next we'll see Hummer give us a greenwashing campaign when they hook up a 2kWh electric motor to a 5.7L gas guzzling engine, get 13mpg and call tell us "Saving the World, One Hummer at a Time"

"This mid-sized "luxury" sedan is basically a Toyota Prius 2010 model."

Are you kidding? You're really confused. The LS600 is NOT a Prius, that's the HS from Lexus and it starts at $34k. The LS600 is a very much full-sized luxury (no quotes necessary) sedan, and is based on the LS line that Lexus has made since the early 90's as their top-of-the-line flagship car.

Hi Jeremy, yes, it is NOT based on a Prius platform, I must have been fixating on the Prius for some odd reason. It is based on the 600 platform. Sadly enough, many regret the departure from the 300 platform that was more fun to drive. Nick

    Hi Matt,

Yes, Lexus hybrids have never been recognized for their fuel efficiency. People who buy them are probably more interested in "going with the times" or keeping up with the neighbors than technicalities.

The point of the article was to gauge where Toyota is going with it. And yes, Lexus is still the "luxury" version of Toyota.
