2010 Elections: Vermont governor

Elections 2010 Information Examiner
Key governor race for the state:
Governor Jim Douglas was first elected in 2002 and is running for his fifth two-year term as governor of Vermont. Vermont is one of two states, along with New Hampshire, with two-year terms for their governor. His moderate stance has worked to his advantage in past elections but Douglas has met much opposition after he attempted to veto a law legalizing same-sex marriage in the state.
Primaries will take place in June 2010. Three Democrats have announced their candidacy for the 2010 governor race:
Deborah Markowitz,
Doug Racine and
Susan Bartlett. Racine was the Democratic nominee for Governor in 2002 and served as lieutenant governor when he lost to Douglas. Markowitz has served as Vermont’s secretary of state since 1998. Serving on the Vermont State Senate, Bartlett announced her candidacy on June 4, 2009.
Although the state of Vermont has leaned Republican as far as their governor goes for the past six years, both the State House and State Senate are controlled by Democrats. Additionally, Democrat Barack Obama won the 67 percent of the states vote in the 2008 presidential election.
