Teachers may have helped defeat Roy Barnes in 2002 bid for a second term, but education has now become his signature issues as he tries to win his old job back in the midterm elections November 2 this fall. This time he promise a better and more inclusive approach to education and teachers.
He is pushing a platform filled with teacher friendly policies like salary increases, smaller class sizes and a ban on furloughs. He also wants to bring two teachers into the governors office to act as advisers. Critics say the Democrat is promising more than he can deliver in these lean budget times. But Barnes say he can put together the 1.2 billion dollars needed to get classrooms back on track. Barnes said if need be he would get the money from halting or suspending a number of special interest tax breaks.
