In response to the national program of greening the community, a group of educational and community-based organizations answered the call by launching the Green the Block campaign.
Green the Block is a joint campaign of Green For All and the Hip Hop Caucus. Job Corps joined them in implementing the program by urging its 122 centers all over the country to participate.
Under the program, the group will educate and mobilize low-income communities and communities of color to ensure a voice and stake in the clean-energy economy.
Green the Block will kick-off Green the Block Service Events on National Service Day on September 21, 2009.
According to its national directive, the "Green the Block launches an effort to educate traditionally underserved communities about opportunities available to individuals in the emerging green economy through job training, entrepreneurship, and increased energy efficiency through infrastructure development".
The four pillars of the Green the Block campaign are: education and awareness, legislative advocacy, youth activism, and private-sector development.
Interim National Director for Job Corps Lynn A. Intrepidi said, "The campaign is grounded on the concept that a clean energy economy can address the joint crises of poverty and pollution at the the same time. Job Corps center staff and students are encouraged to volunteer in Green the Block events sponsored by local and civic community organizations across the country."
Among the suggested activities to support the program include "educating neighbors and community about energy efficiency; opportunities to sign-up for training/apprenticeship programs for local "green jobs"; community rallies, distributing energy-saving light bulbs; visiting organic farms; and working to rebuild and renew communities such as Wetlands by growing trees and grasses in nurseries".
