Since the SFUSD school assignment letters arrived Saturday, parents have been posting in a frenzy on TheSFKFiles, the forum of choice for seeking support, asking questions and just venting. At the moment there are 714 comments on the post put up Friday about the assignment letters.
As I’ve said, I’m seeing a new attitude – much more openness from parents whose kids got a school they’ve never heard of to checking it out, maybe banding together with others and bringing in a new infusion of volunteer-minded parents with resources.
The Internet opens up possibilities unknown a few years ago. Within 24 hours after the assignment letters landed in mailboxes, a parent had put up a blog for those interested in making a commitment to downtrodden, formerly scorned John Muir Elementary, in the Western Addition/Hayes Valley, two blocks from the artsy-trendy stretch of Hayes Street.
If that blog helps organize parents into a force that brings a new infusion of families and resources to John Muir – it may not happen, but it could – it will be a fantastic demonstration of the powers of the Internet and a testament to two words we’ve heard a lot lately, “hope” and “change.”
