In their continuing quest to improve the quality of school lunches, students from Abraham Lincoln High School in San Francisco’s Sunset District attended the May 2 town hall meeting held by Congresswoman Jackie Speier (D-San Francisco/San Mateo) at Ulloa Elementary School.
About a dozen seniors from Lincoln’s American Democracy class put off studying for their AP exams, attending weekend classes at City College, and other responsibilities, to try to get their Congressional representative to join their campaign to make school food better. A student speaking on behalf of the group told Speier that the federal reimbursement for school meals is too low, and pointed out that after labor and overhead, only about $1 is left to pay for the food; the student group is asking that more money be added to the Child Nutrition Act reauthorization to pay for better school meals.
Much to the surprise and gratification of the students, Rep. Speier said that if students invited her to join them for lunch at their school, she would be happy to come. Plans are already underway to set a date for that lunch meeting. Is there any doubt that if the members of Congress had to eat school lunch every day, getting more funding for better school food would be…(wait for it)…a piece of cake?
