Creating an Educational Craft Corner

Maine Education Fast Stat: “The Maine Literacy Initiative has awarded 166 grants totaling of $2,787,855 in its twenty-year history to develop or expand Maine literacy programs.” [source]

There is no doubt most kids love to create crafts. So, why not take this opportunity to create an educational craft corner? Just because the word educational is in included, that does not mean the creative process will not be fun!

Some suggestions:
  1. While a spare room or corner of a garage would be great, this not always available or realistic. The education craft corner can easily be set up wherever space is available. It could be the corner of your kitchen, an area of your basement, or the corner of a bedroom for example.
  2. Be sure to choose an area of your living space where it is okay to make a mess. This is particularly true if you are working with paint or glue.
  3. Try to not to choose a dark area of your home, if possible. If you have no other choice but to choose a dark area of your home, such as your basement, be sure to light the space well using clear white bulbs.
  4. Be sure there is enough storage space available to ensure the workspace remains uncluttered and organized. This can be in the form of shelving, storage bins, and other essentials you may need to house supplies.
  5. Include craft books and other enrichment materials to create a craft corner that is conducive to learning. Add elements your child has never tried creating to further enhance the educational experience.
As you can see, the fun has not been removed from the equation just because it has education incorporated into the mix. As the craft corner is being created, include your children in the process as much as possible. Quiz them about what they are interested in learning about, projects they have always wanted to try, and materials they have never worked with in the past.
