Three out of four American citizens ages 17 to 24 are unfit for military service, according to a government report called "Ready, Willing and Unable to Serve."
What are some of the reasons that young people are not qualified for military service?
1) The main reason is that most applicants are not physically fit. About 27% are too obese, and 33% have health problems other than weight.
2) About 25% do not qualify for military service because they did not graduate from high school.
3) If applicants have criminal records, they are not allowed into the military.
4) The military does not want applicants who are in debt.
It is not easy to be a recruiter. For example, the Air Force recruiters have to contact 110 interested candidates before bringing one qualified airman into the Air Force.
The report about youth and the military was endorsed by U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, former commander Wesley Clark, and other top military leaders, according to the Detroit Free Press.
