I took Spanish for 6 years in high school and college and had a really hard time learning the language, so I was a bit hesitant to review Rosetta Stone's language software. I wasn't sure I could do so effectively.
I was delighted to find that I was wrong. I was able to quickly learn to speak a few simple Irish words and phrases after only a few short lesson segments. (I decided to try learning the Irish language because it was so different from Spanish.)
The software is designed so that you repeat words and phrases until you match the pronunciation of the speaker. Since my biggest problem is repeating things correctly, I found this aspect to be extremely helpful.
I also liked the matching section, which helped me reinforce the meaning of the words I just learned.
Next, I handed the computer over to a five year old and let her choose a language. She had the same response I did - learning was easy and fun.
For a final test, I asked my 24 year old brother to give Rosetta Stone a try. I was afraid I'd never get my computer back, but he finally handed it over a few hours later. His verdict? He loved it and wants to subscribe to the personal online version, which costs $199.95 for six months.
Overall, I'd say Rosetta Stone is the best computerized teaching method for languages that I've come across. If you can't afford to hire a tutor, this is definitely a great option.
