I've been hearing all day that Georgia didn't make the race to the top.  I wasn't too surprised, as my state well... kinda sucks in education.  So when I finally sat down to look into it, I realized that we were close to winning.  How close, I wondered?  Then it hit me.

Only two states split the $600 million reward.

Two states...

$600 million.

Are they using new math?   Perhaps.

"Tennessee will receive $500 million, and Delaware gets $100 million.

In selecting winners, the education department used a complicated scoring system that weighted everything from states' willingness to track student and teacher performance, adopt uniform standards, and turn around or close their worst schools. Delaware garnered 454 out of a possible 500 points, while Tennessee accrued 444. "

You'd think that if they were give out Six hundred, million dollars, that they could split it among... say... 10, 20, or even 30 states and still be effective.  Go figure.

Nice. Is our government trying to improve the entire education system or continue to provide resources to only a few? Isn't this already a problem in most major cities? It's not the teachers' fault if their hands are tied due to lack of funds or support.
The public school system's outlook isn't good, folks.

Just one other thing: Wouldn't top performing education systems be happy for the title and a good reputation. Do they actually NEED the funds? Wouldn't that money be put to better use in struggling schools? It seems so obvious to me, but I guess politicians know more than we on how our money should be spent.

I hate federal programs like RTT. Many in our state did not even want the money as it comes with all kinds of unfunded mandates for future years. Even though I'm glad we didn't receive it, once again MI will be a donor state. We already only get 90 cents back for every dollar we give to the Feds despite the economy and unemployment in MI.

This is so sad-that these funds were not distributed more evenly because of hoops and bells -sad really.

I wish this country would get their schools on the right page. These kids are our future they need to get a good education. I am so disappointed in the educational system nation wide.
