ACLC holds prayer breakfast at Dallas Church

The American Clergy Leadership Conference (ACLC), Texas Chapter, held its monthly prayer breakfast at Church of the Living God, 1718 Overton Road in Dallas on Saturday morning, January 16, 2010. The interfaith group, whose primary mission is to “focus our attention to help guide leaders from the church, community businesses, and even heads of state, and be the voice of the prophet to the nation and world,” has been and continues to be the primary force in bringing together diverse faith traditions to work together for the common good of all.

It is no wonder then that the devastating tragedy in Haiti was a prominent concern at the breakfast and several prayers and offers of help were expressed by those attending the event. Rev. Mark Hernandez, leader of the group, announced that members of the national organization were already on ground in Haiti and providing needed relief.

The highlight of the gathering was a rousing speech by Dr. Deborah Isaac Hopes entitled “One Nation Under God with Unity and Brotherly Love.” Dr. Hopes is the assistant pastor at the Church of the Living God and a retired Public School Educator. In her brief but impacted speech, she traced the history of the phrase, “One nation under God,” in US political history and showed how the United States has failed to live up to its motto as well as how the ACLC is helping to lead the country into embracing its motto in word and in deed.

She cited several biblical references to show how the many problems in the US, Haiti, and the world can be solved if such entities would just turn to God as the writer of 2 Chronicles 7:14 advises.
Several times Dr. Hopes’ speech was interrupted by loud applause and shouts of “Amen!” It was evident that her words struck a chord of resonance within the hearts and minds of those present just as the delicious foods served to the early morning gatherers had satisfied their bodies. Bishop Dr. Larry D. McGriff is the host pastor.
