Green Obsessions: Demon Carbon

LA Ecopolitics Examiner
Environmental activists are promoting an irrational demonization of carbon on our planet of carbon-based ecosystems. All life on earth would end without carbon in the form of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide. With the new Obama administration, the US EPA has concluded that carbon dioxide is linked to climate change, and therefore, is a danger to public health and welfare. Low-carbon renewable energy is all the rage.
Environmental groups agitate for free media attention as a routine advertising
and fund raising practice – US green groups have about $1.5 billion in assets. Founded in 1960, The Sierra Club (Foundation with affiliates) is one of the elite eco-groups that jumped to exploit the carbon demonization theme. It claims about 700,000 members, with about $110 million in assets supporting nonprofit and political affiliates in the US. In July this year, The Sierra Club issued press releases and website hoopla celebrating its six-year campaign to stop 100 coal-fired power plants in the US. IBD reports that The Sierra Club is gloating about having stopped 100 proposed coal electric power plants that would have provided thousands of jobs, billions in economic development and 61,000 megawatts of electric power for as many as 50,000 homes. This, as the North American Electricity Reliability Council reports that projected electricity demands will outstrip power supply by 3:1 in the next few decades. Now that China’s economic growth exceeds America’s GDP by a factor of three, China is opening a new coal-fired electric plant each week, and has no plans to accept any global greenhouse gas controls.
The Electric Power Research Institute reports that wind power costs about 40% more than present coal power, and that solar power costs about 170% more than coal power. Global governments want to regulate carbon as a climate thermostat. Costly, rushed (and largely unread) government pollution regulations to reduce carbon for theoretical climate control are futile and economic suicide during a global recession. Environmentalism’s obsession with climate has become the central front in the green war against capitalism.

Uh, the Sierra Club was founded in 1892, not 1960. And your list of "elite groups" that have "demonized carbon" should include the most respected scientific body in the world, the National Academy of Sciences, and the national science academies of every leading industrial nation -- all of whom issued a joint call to lower carbon emissions, as well as the world's leading body on climate research -- the IPCC, the American Meteorological Society --- basically every respected scientific body that has actually looked at the research. But then, if you can't get a founding date right within 93 years, I suppose actually looking up what the NAS or IPCC says would be way too much to ask.
You can tell that corporations run the world because we haven't come to a global agreement on climate change. Even though the People of the world would like to see action now, business can't see past this quarter's earnings and that means neither can the world's governments. Humanity is being held hostage by the short term interests of corporations. If we're smart we'll realize that it's time to put capitalism second.
Mr. Taylor and his rants against the earth are disgusting. I was shocked to learn that this man is published at all. While I will forever defend the right to free speech and expression, it is nonetheless difficult to believe that such blatant ignorance could be taken as logic or truth by any person with a modicum of intelligence. Publishing Mr. Taylor's ludicrous and hateful rantings qualifies with taking the advice of an institutionalized lunatic.
