The outplacement firm Challenger Gray and Christmas reported today that planned layoff announcements fell from 76,456 in August to 66,404 in September, the lowest level since March 2008.
The report is not seasonally adjusted and does not distinguish between announcements and actual job reductions.
But the level is more in line with cuts announced prior to the recession, suggesting companies are growing more confident regarding economic prospects.
Still, weekly jobless claims, which are also trending lower, remain at stubbornly high levels as the economy slowly pulls out of the recession.
