Who’s To Blame – By Trent Kinsey – Short Horror

One of the great things about downloadable formats is the reader isn't limited to full-length novels.  Great reads come in all word counts, and Trent Kinsey seems to be an up-and-coming master at handing out shivers.  Those with a Kindle will be delighted to find this story available at Amazon.com.

In Who's To Blame, John thinks his life has ended when his daughter dies of Leukemia and his wife leaves him. He spends a year on the couch, watching TV and relying on his retirement money for support until his agent calls and begs him to write a biography on famous author, Mark Edwards. To coin a quote from the author’s work about why he becomes a hermit:  “The pain becomes a loan from a mob boss—compounding and collecting interest until you lose your sanity as payment." But, even  time hasn’t  healed John's anger.

Mark Edward’s wife died years earlier from Cancer, and he blames God. During the time the two men spend together, John learns that he mistakenly aimed his ire at his wife. He didn’t listen to her grief…realize she lost a daughter, too. His revelation that he still loves his mate comes as a surprise, but not nearly one as shocking as the evening news report. A small town in California has been hit by a mystery medical outbreak, hundreds are dead, but not one death is attributed to the virus. John wants to find his wife...assure she's okay and make amends, but what ensues will make your skin crawl…literally.

Mr. Kinsey raises a good question: Who would you blame when the world falls apart? While this is a work of fiction, in these times of terrorist attacks, threats of germ warfare, and weapons of mass destruction, picturing something akin to this story becoming a reality isn’t hard, but terribly frightening. The author paints a very vivid picture of normal life leading up to grief, a period of adjustment, then being faced with horrific reality that life as we’ve come to appreciate it will never again be the same. At that point, blame becomes a useless emotion.

Although this is a a fairly short read, it's guaranteed to leave you wanting more of Trent Kinsey. His writing is impressive and he's penned a a story real enough to give you nightmares. And, at the end of his tale, if you feel really hungry, be afraid… be very afraid.
