The plight of the American Indian in the old west has long been misinterpreted. Those of you who grew up watching made-for-TV westerns always saw the Indian as the villain. Finally, in Follow the Stars Home by author, Cate Masters, you get a true feel of what it felt like to “walk a mile” in a pair of moccasins.
Quiet Thunder approaches marriage age, and her heart belongs to Black Bear. He’s even promises her father three horses for her hand when times get better.Buffalo are scarce, the tribe is forced to move more often than normal to find even small game no longer abounds.Vulnerable, this Lakota tribe, as well as other nations fall victim to a military captain who baits them with the promise that schooling in the white man’s way will help the children become more successful in life. The Indians are being pushed from land once covered with bison herds, and in the animal’s place are more and more white settlers, miners, and military forts.
Quiet Thunder volunteers to go when her parents opt to send her younger brother. The bigger draw is Black Bear’s parents are sending him. Life without him seems unbearable.Once the young Lakota arrive in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, they find little together time but lots of hours spent studying. The rigor of the work and the insistence that anything Lakota disappear is far more than a proud brave can handle. The motto, Kill the Indian, save the man,” says it all. Can the two young lovers reunite and restore their love and Lakota spirit?
Ms. Masters has penned an insightful and entertaining novel that’s bound to teach you a few things about history. The mark of a good historical writing is peppering in the historical facts, and although this one may seem to have more than a peppering, you’ll walk away knowing much more than you did about the Lakota and their brethren than you did when you began the story.Kudos to Cate Masters for another winning novel. You won’t be able to put Follow the Stars Home down until you turn the last page.
