Ramen noodles can be a main dish

Back in the days when I was single and in the Army (college grads can relate), many of my meals consisted of food that was extremely inexpensive and took only a minute or so to make. One of my favorite cheap meals that literally cost me 14-cents to make was ramen noodles. I would head to the commissary on base and buy about 20 packages of ramen noodles in all flavors. Back at the barracks, I would drop a pack in a bowl, fill it with water, and pop it in the microwave. A few minutes later, I had a nice hot bowl of noodle soup.

After a while, though, it started to get boring. So, I began experimenting with it. One of my Army buddies tried adding cheese to his. I tried it...and liked it! I also tried adding hot sauce, which I liked just as much. I would also break up pieces of bread and drop it in the soup. It became somewhat of a noodle/dumpling soup.

It wasn't until I met the lovely lady that is now my wife that showed me an even better way to eat those cheap packets of ramen noodles. This new way actually turned out to be really good, very fulfilling, and it even made me feel a little better about myself because I didn't feel like such a cheapskate.

It's easy. Follow these steps below using two packages of any type of ramen noodles and feel free to improvise to embellish your own taste.

You'll need:

  • Two packages of ramen noodles
  • One egg
  • soy sauce
  • Two or three green onions
  • One cup of any left over meat (such as steak, hot dogs, chicken, etc)
  • Dash of Salt
  • Dash of Pepper
  • Half teaspoon of sugar

Bring 3 cups of water to a boil in a small pot. Once the water boils, add the spices/sauces that come with the noodles to the boiling water. Next, add the noodles and stir occasionally until the noodles start to become soft. Crack open one egg and drop it into the pot and immediately stir vigorously. Splash in some soy sauce for taste.  Drop in the meat. Cut up the green onions and drop it in followed by the salt, pepper, and sugar. Remove from heat...you shouldn't let the noodle become overcooked. This makes 4 servings.

Noodle Soup

Just give this meal a try. You can change it up however you like. Try adding different vegetables or meats. You could also try adding your favorite sauces, such as Sriracha. The combination possibilities are endless. It should only take about ten minutes max to make this.

Enjoy!

Awesome idea! I would've never thought of the egg cooked in with the noodles. Great protein booster! You do an excellent job with your personal accounts too. Sweet how you credited your wife; you're a good man.

I will have to give this a try. We have lots of these noodles on hand for quick meals, but this will kick it up a notch or two.
