Summer reading challenges get toddlers (and their parents) excited about reading

I Know a Rhino is a family favorite around here!

Getting your kids excited about reading in the summer isn’t hard if you have a toddler in tow.  In fact, most toddlers (like mine!) love to cuddle up with their moms and dads to read tons of good stories.

There are two great programs I just learned about that can help encourage and reward your child’s summer reading efforts.  And in addition to these national programs, check out your local library – they often do summer book reading challenges too!

The Borders Summer Reading Challenge:
Borders is hosting a Summer Reading Challenge for kids 0-12.  Kids can read any eight books.  They should note the titles of the books on Border’s Summer Reading Challenge coupon form and then bring it into any Borders or Waldenbooks store. The coupon can be redeemed for the purchase of a new children’s book for $4.99, which is 50% or more off the regular price. And parents benefit too because you’ll get 50% off the beverage of your choice at the Seattle’s Best Coffee café when you bring your child in to redeem the coupon.

Sylvan’s Book Adventure Program:
Sylvan Learning is also helping kids K-8th grade read this summer through its Book Adventure program.  Sylvan lists 7,000+ books and then enables kids to take multiple choice quizzes on the books they've read.  Kids can earn points and prizes for their literary successes.  Check out the site to find a Sylvan recommended book.
