"LuLu" of LuLu's Big Hair Salsa
This article is one in a series recognizing regular moms who are doing their part to stimulate the economy through small business entrepreneurship. (In the process, they are unavoidably and quite possibly, unknowingly, rejecting 'Obama-nomics' to follow 'Odonna-nomics.' The main difference being the Change in this campaign typically involves a smelly diaper or the waterfall of coins that plummets out of the bottom of our purses while our kids pillage for a piece of gum.)
Today we are examining the entrepreneurial spirit of Mary Lou Roggow of Renner, SD. Mary Lou is the founder and owner of LuLu's Big Hair Salsa. She began making salsa 15 years ago for friends and family and has turned her passion into a business, retailing her product at all Sioux Falls Hy-Vee locations, The Co-op Natural Foods, Cleavers Market, Meadowsweet, Renner Corner, and Your Secret Kitchen, where the salsa is prepared and packaged.
With the support of her husband and a little family help from time to time, Mary Lou is a one-woman operation. She states "The biggest challenge was just finding my way through all the hoops that you have to jump through to get it ready to sell. Everyone I was in contact with lead me to my next call. It's just finding the right questions to ask. The biggest reward so far is to be able to see it in the stores actually selling! We would love to see it go nationwide!!! Wouldn't that be a kick??!!"
