What's in a name? The meanings behind the names of Palin's children *UPDATED*

One of the things that probably struck many folks as they began to read about Sarah Palin after being named as McCain's running mate were the non-traditional names of her five children.

Palin's youngest son is named Trig Paxson Van Palin. After Trig was born, a spokesperson for Palin said that Trig is Norse for true and brave victory. His middle name, Paxson, is the name of an area of Alaska that Palin and her husband think is "one of the most beautiful spots in Alaska," according to a report on MSNBC. Palin is on record joking that she was naming Trig "Van Palin" after eighties rockers Van Halen.

Palin's 18-year-old son is named Track. Todd Palin, Sarah's husband, recently told People Magazine, "Sarah's parents were coaches and the whole family was involved in track and I was an athlete in high school, so with our first-born, I was, like, 'Track!'"

Bristol, Palin's oldest daughter, 17, means "meeting place by the bridge," according to thinkbabynames.com. Bristol is Old English and is the name of an important town in England, which many US cities were named after as well. It has not ranked in the top 1000 baby names in the US in the last 100 years. Bristol Bay is where Todd Palin grew up and fishes.

The name of 13 year old Willow is the Old English name of a tree - the willow. Last year, the SSA ranked it as #230 in popularity for baby girls. Willow is also a town in Alaska.

Piper is Palin's youngest daughter at 7 years old. Piper is an Old English name meaning pipe player or flute player. It is commonly used as a boy and a girl name. It ranked #240 on the SSA database last year and has only been in the top 1000 names since 1999. Todd Palin said to People Magazine about Piper's name, "you know, there's just not too many Pipers out there and it's a cool name."

Willow is from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Piper is from CHARMED... She's probably a huge fan of teenage vampire shows.

I really don't care where the Palin's did it but I think it is disgusting that the children have to endure a badge of salaciousness the rest of their lives. I think she is a freak and i am not completely sure why she feels compelled to use her down syndrome baby as a stage prop. If she knew that the baby was down syndrome and holds herself out as being great because she didn't have an abortion I ask do the republicans understand this is insulting because it presumes that Down Syndrome babies are not as important as other babies. Why does it really matter either way if the baby has Down Syndrome? Ms. Palin saying she still had the baby is self-centered and arrogant because it presumes that the disabled child is somehow not as good to keep as a healthy baby and that Ms. Palin made some extraordinary sacrifice for a child that was conceived allegedly when she was 43 years old. Ever heard of down syndrome being a risk after 40 or do they not teach that in the inteliigent design/creationism curriculum? or is the baby the daughter's baby?

I think people have the right to name their children whatever they want. And I commend Sarah on naming her kids something other than Ashley and Josh. I get so sick of meeting people with the same names. Its boring. I love meeting people with different names. They have a story to tell about their name. And its just cool to say, yeah I have a friend named Tripp.. or whatever the person's name is. The hospital doesn't hand out names. And by the way its 2008 almost 2009. Get with the program, we have a lot more things to worry about than what people name their kids. Also, I think that Sarah isn't trying to make her self look amazing by saying she kept baby Trig. She probably is very proud of herself for not breaking down. I know people with Downs babies. Its hard. And she should be proud. She has a lot on her plate.
