Whether your having a backyard barbecue or a long weekend camp out, you'll want to keep bugs at bay this 4th of July weekend. But do so safely with natural bug repellents instead of ones with DEET.
The National Institutes of Health says products with DEET can be dangerous for small children and should NEVER be used on infants. Instead, try out one of these natural bug remedies. They all smell citrusy and refreshing, not yucky like many of the other insect repellents out there. And a little goes a long way so don't overdue it just because they're natural products.
- Quit Bugging Me Bug Spray by JASON uses geranium, soybean and coconut oils to keep away mosquitoes, gnats, flies and other insects and prevent bug bites. It's recommended to use on little ones 6 months and up.
- Insect Armor by Vermont Soap Organics is non greasy and provides protection from flying bugs and ticks. It's safe for children and pets and the environment. Not only is there no DEET, there's also no other harmful petroleum derived chemicals, pesticides, or neurotoxins. Insect Armor uses lemon eucalyptus and other natural essential oils to keep bugs away.
- Bug Joose by All Things Jill has a witch hazel base and bug repelling essential oils of cedarwood, lavender, rosemary, eucalyptus, pine, lemongrass & citronella. Its very light and not sticky.
- Kameleon Bug Away Pure Essential Oil Blend works as either a bug repellent applied to the skin or can be used in a diffuser to keep bugs away from your whole outdoor area. Just fill the base with water and add in 6-12 drops of Bug Away, then light the candle. I really like this option for dining in the backyard! For pregnant and breast feeding mamas use 1/3 the amount of oil. Bug Away has patchouli, clove, cedarwood, lemongrass, teatree, citronella and eucalyptus.
