This is a part of a new series of stories called Diaper Diaries - The Diaper Challenge that explores cloth diapering, which is gaining in popularity everyday. (Read the rest of the articles in this series HERE.)
I challenged diaper companies small and large to send me their best diaper to test out. I will be reporting my findings about each diaper individually as well as comparing and contrasting them later in this series. Each diaper has been tested for about a month by both my one year old and 2.5 year old girls.
Bummis, bummis.com
Bummis sells both Bummis brand diapers and diaper covers as well as Bamboozle diapers in the US. The Bamboozle is actually made by a Scottish diaper company called TotsBots. The Bummis are made in Canada.
Of the diapers sold in the US by Bummis, I tried the Bamboozle in size 2 ($18-$20 depending on retailer) and the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap in Froggy Pond in size medium ($10.95-$12.25 depending on retailer). (Find retailers near you HERE.)
The Bummis Whisper Wrap comes in several cute prints and plain white (if you'd prefer). This wrap is "a state of the art Aplix-closing cover made from a super resistant waterproof laminate sandwiched between two layers of a soft polyester knit," according to Bummis.com.
The Super Whisper Wrap is very sturdy and does a great job of holding in liquid. It fits nicely with the Bamboozle or with just a prefold if you prefer. I personally like to use this one as a potty trainer with just an insert for my older daughter.
Bummis is very particular about washing instructions for their diaps and covers. You can find those HERE as well as specific recommendations on detergents to use HERE. Even if you don't use Bummis, their info on detergent residue is really helpful in understanding how to get the most out of your cloth diapers so they perform the best!
Even though not officially part of this Diaper Challenge, I also would recommend Bummi's regular Whisper Pant. I bought several of these on sale at my local cloth diaper retailer and I really love how easy they are to use. They're also great to use in potty training because you can just add in a liner and they can be pulled up and down. They run quite large, so order a size smaller than you might normally opt for. More info on those HERE.
The Bamboozle diaper is made from four layers of super soft 90% bamboo fiber. That and its super absorbency are big sellers for this luxurious feeling diap. It has an insert attached at one end so you can fold it for extra absorbency in the area boys or girls need the most. Poop also falls off of the Bamboozle easily and it has yet to get stained, despite several attempts by my daughters to give it their all. Despite its absorbency, or more likely because of it, the Bamboozle gets really wet feeling if you have a heavy wetter, particularly overnight. That's why, like all the other diapers I've tested so far, I don't use this one at night. My girls wake up too early if I do. Not because it leaks but because it feels wet to them.
Bamboozle diapers need to be washed at least twice before initial wear and up to ten times before maximum absorbency is reached. You can find out more about the special care instructions HERE. Though honestly, I follow the same washing rules for all of my diapers. This one is not any harder or easier.
Bummis' website says "Tots Bots products are Oeko-Tex certified – which means they have passed stringent European standards for non-toxicity."

Comments
in my experience: i have one bamboozle that i like OK.
*the elastic on it seem a little too tight. doesn't leave red marks, but the fit just seems weird.
*their attached doubler design is one of the smarter ones out there.
*the diaper seems more stink-prone than some of my others. had problems for awhile, but eventually resolved them.
in sum: worth a try, but don't blindly stock up.
best cover for newborns imho!
