Breastfeeding 101: What does a new breastfeeding mama need?

Technically, if you're going to breastfeed, you don't need much more than your milk supplying breasts.  But there are a few products on the market that are very helpful to a new mother to have on hand.

Here is a list of things you can get for breastfeeding your baby and where appropriate, a money saving alternative.

Nursing Bras and Tops:   Nursing bras are very helpful to have not only because they make nursing convenient, but also because they keep mom comfortable.  Since breast size changes over the course of the pregnancy, it is best to get fitted for a nursing bra closer to the end of your term.  Shops such as the Pump Station have trained personnel to assist you with sizing and fit.  You can also ascertain your own bra size by following these steps.  Nursing tops are also very helpful, but not as necessary as a nursing bra.

Physical Support:  Generally, moms feed newborns sitting up.  This can lead to posture problems and back pain.  Breastfeeding pillows like the Boppy or My Breast Friend are ideal for supporting your posture and your baby.  I personally prefer the Breast Friend to the Boppy since it is firmer and higher, which I think is very helpful for taller women.   Both come with a variety of covers, so you can wash and change covers as needed.   A further use of such pillows is to provide the baby with support when they do tummy time and when they start learning how to sit.  But to save money, you can probably use a pillow in your home.

Nipple creams and Nursing Pads:  If you have sore cracked nipples, you may need nipple creams, such as the Lansinoh HPA Lanolin.  This is a topical nipple treatment created with a patented refining process, using ultra-pure, medical-grade lanolin to help heal sore, cracked nipples. It is the only lanolin available that contains no preservatives or additives of any kind, so it does not have to be removed before breastfeeding.

If you have engorged breasts you may need nursing pads.  You can get disposable or reuseable pads which will assist with the leaks.

However, nipple creams and nursing pads are things you can purchase after your baby arrives and you establish your milk supply, because many women do not experience these issues.  Should you need these items, they are readily available at most pharmacies.

Bottles & Accessories:  Surprising as it may seem, breastfeeding for most women does entail the use of bottles.  Many moms express their milk and prefer to use storage bottles rather than bags.  And many moms need a feed or two to be provided in a bottle by dad, so that they can get some rest and dad can get some bonding time with the baby.  If you intend to do this, you will need feeding bottles.  There are many options available on the market.  The safest bottles for baby (from a chemical friendly point of view) are either those made with glass or those that are BPA free plastic bottles.  For a list of BPA free bottles, click here.

Bottles need accessories:  a bottle brush for cleaning is a must.  If you foresee the need to heat expressed breastmilk, you a bottle warmer is convenient.  Breastmilk should not be heated in a microwave because its anti-infective properties may be lost with rapid heating.  Bottle warmers tend to heat the breastmilk by steaming it.  A bottle drying rack is nice to have but not necessary if you have a clean place to dry your bottles.  A microwave sterilizer makes sterilizing bottles easy, but if you are lacking space for one more appliance, you can simply sterilize the bottles in a large pot of hot water.

Breast Pump: If you anticipate expressing breastmilk, consider buying or renting a breast pump.  For information on how to pick a breastpump, click here.  SInce breast size varies, breast pumps have different sized accessories to fit different breasts.

Nursing CoversCertainly, nursing covers do not appear to be necessary in Southern California, where breastfeeding in public is largely accepted practice.  But if you live in a more conservative area, nursing covers may be a good idea.  Bebe Au Lait makes beautiful nursing covers and if you google "nursing covers" you will find many more options as well. Of course, one can also make do with a swaddling cloth or a baby blanket draped over a shoulder.  But the advantage of the nursing covers is that you do not have to worry about them slipping off.

That 'my Brestfriend' is a very strong candidate for 'Man's Best Friend' for dads like me who choose to give their very young babies a bottle. Not only does that thing provide a base for our son to rest his bum and legs while he reclines back on dad's chest to drink but also the surface is big enough so that smaller babies - after the feeding and burping - can actually stretch and fall asleep fully lying down on their sides. Better yet, if you carefully support your child and the Brestfriend, you can actually walk from wherever you did the feeding to the child's cot with him/her lying on the brestfreind to minimize the disruption before you put him down for the night. So convenient!
