Today's Where to find inspiration interview is with Melissa, author of the educational blog Chasing Cheerios. Chasing Cheerios is full of clever, Montessori-inspired activities, art projects and family fun. Be sure to see the photo album at the bottom of the page for examples of her learning activities.
Tell me about you and your blog.
My name is Melissa, and I am the happily married mother of a 3 year old daughter and a baby girl who is due any day. I started my blog, Chasing Cheerios, when my daughter was about 16 months old. I wanted to share ideas with other moms and to document our daily activities. Chasing Cheerios is full of the different Montessori-inspired activities, arts and crafts, and science activities that we do each day. I also love to make handmade gifts for my daughter and I enjoy sharing the ideas on my blog.
What is your philosophy on education?
My main objective for our “school” at home is to make learning fun and exciting. My daughter wants to know everything about everything, and her thirst for knowledge is inspiring. We have so much fun learning together and I want to always encourage her love of learning. We spend much of our days reading book after book after book, and there is nothing that either of us enjoys more than reading books together.
Where do you get your ideas?
Many of my ideas come from other blogs. I see an idea and tweak it to work for us. Many of the activities we do come from magazines and library books. I also think of many ideas as I am going to sleep at night.
What advice or tips can you give parents and educators?
Always strive to make learning fun, and spend as much time as possible reading to your child each day.
